Volunteering can be a fun and rewarding experience. Here at the Sherman Auxiliary, we want to make it as easy as possible for you to get into gear and get involved. In order to do that, we have provided you with the following information about what we look for in a volunteer and other helpful guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Sherman Hospital seeks individuals 16 years and older who have an interest in helping those who utilize the hospital and its services.  Prospective volunteers should have a positive outlook, be flexible and be interested in helping others and be willing to volunteer at least 50 hours over the course of a year.

APPLICATION PROCESS:  Volunteers are asked to complete an application process that includes an informational sheet that provides data about the prospective volunteer and his/her skills, interests, etc.  Once you have completed your application bring it in or send it.  We will schedule you to attend the next available orientation.  Once that is completed, we will make an appointment for a mandatory TB and drug screening.

AUXILIARY MEMBERSHIP:  All volunteers 18 and older are automatically members of the Sherman Hospital Auxiliary.  Dues are waived for active volunteers (50 hours or more).  Membership entitles one to receive the newsletter, attend the holiday party, volunteer recognition, receive discounts at the Gift Shop, Coffee Shop and Sherman Perk and receive invitations to other luncheon programs.

TRAINING:  All volunteers will have an orientation to Sherman Hospital, volunteer policies and safety information.  You will be shown how to record your hours, given other pertinent information and shown your placement site.  Once at the placement site, there will be further training for how to do the volunteer job you have been assigned.

IDENTIFICATION/UNIFORM/DRESS CODE:  All volunteers are required to wear a hospital-issued picture identification tag while are on duty.  Volunteers also must wear a Sherman Volunteer blue or orange jacket or vest.  These may be purchased for $15 or borrowed from the Volunteer Services Department.  A $15 deposit must be made which will be refunded when the smock is returned. Volunteers are asked to wear a white shirt underneath the jacket and white, navy, black or khaki pants or skirts.  Pants must be full-length and skirts to the knee.  Open-toed shoes are not allowed, but clean gym shoes are acceptable.  The badge is to be returned when the volunteer leaves our service.

CONFIDENTIALITY:  It is important that all prospective volunteers understand that Sherman Hospital adheres to a strict policy about patient confidentiality and volunteers must be willing to sign an agreement to maintain confidentiality.

TIME COMMITMENT:  Volunteers are asked to make a specific time commitment for a shift or so a week and to make every effort to fulfill that commitment.  If volunteers will need to be away, there is a form to fill out so that we can attempt to fill your shift.  It is very important to be consistent.  Staff and patients count on the help the volunteer supplies.  Written verification of hours cannot be given until 25 hours are completed.

PLACEMENT SITES: Please see our information on the community outreach page.
