The Birthing Center at Sherman’s replacement hospital will provide the optimum setting for a safe, innovative, flexible, efficient, and healthy environment for both mother and baby.
The space, designed with future expansion in mind, will have the neonatal intensive care unit, the C-section suite, and the labor/delivery/recovery rooms all on one floor -- a great advantage for patient flow and for mothers with sick newborns. In addition, there is a connection to the third floor of the Medical Office Building occupied by OB physicians.
The Auxiliary-funded Birthing Center will include:
- All private rooms that will allow for better mother/baby care and better total family involvement
- All rooms will have private showers
- Two family lounge areas
- A family consult room
- 10 labor/delivery/recovery rooms
- 28 postpartum rooms
- 5 antepartum rooms
- 2 C-section rooms
- 4 triage rooms
- 2 outpatient rooms
- 2 bed post anesthesia care unit
- A birth registrar on unit
- A family resource room with a library/Internet connection
- A children’s play area in the waiting room
- An on-call suite for the physicians on the floor
- Its own waiting room for NICU
- Lactation consultants on unit and available for post discharge visits
